Abstract: The monitoring system of a chainsaw can be used for keeping track of the performance and condition of a chainsaw. During monitoring, a substantial amount of data is collected. This raw data must be processed into useful information, which then can be utilised in many ways. A performance index presented here is based on a statistical model of sawing times. The index gives a valuable information to the user of the harvester. In many cases failure that occurs is hidden. Even when the failure is increasing the sawing times, the increment of the sawing times is not necessary visible for the user of the harvester. With the index, the user can observe possible changes in the performance of a chainsaw and detect failures before they cause more serious damages. The index also gives an indication whether it is time to change or sharpen the chain.
